     22 Months!
Monday, June 30, 2008

Benjamin is 22 months old. Also known as, "almost two," in my book.

22 months!
Doing his bizarre dance with his fingers moving up and down...

He is obsessed with trucks, trains, airplanes, swimming, jumping, being outdoors, baths, and still, Dora the Explorer.

He loves ice cream, dancing, counting, the colors yellow and blue, and popsicles.

He uses new words every day, and is getting crafty at stringing them together. He is using please and thank you a good bulk of the time, and will shake your hand when he meets you. He's still pretty shy about talking around new people, but he warms up quickly!

Now I guess I need to start thinking about a 2nd birthday party in a couple of months!

Because, when your kid is sick...
Thursday, June 26, 2008

When your kid is sick, and bored, and stuck at home all week...what do you do?

Obviously, you buy them something.

It's hot as Hades here, and I don't want to take Benjamin to the pool quite yet, and he was saying "shoes, outdoors, peeeeease mom stroller thank you" over and over, so upon a friend's recommendation, I went to get him a little pool for the backyard.

They didn't have a little pool. They had a big pool, and since I've downsized on the automobile side, I had no way, short of walking it the mile home on my back, of getting it home.

I think the Kmart manager felt bad for me, because he gave me a different, inflatable pool for the same price.

I grossly misjudged the size. So now we have a not-so-little pool in our backyard. It has a bench and cup holders. No joke.

Can you say FUN?

New pool!

New pool!

New pool!

I am SUCH a sucker.

Sick
Thursday, June 26, 2008

We're in the midst of recovering from strep throat, and in general, pretty miserable.

Being sick in the summer is SO much worse than being sick any other time of year.

So, I never put my contacts in today (I didn't drive anywhere...), but I did help Andrew put this together:

Choo CHOO!

You know you are a parent when you are excited (and constantly refreshing the fedex tracking page) about a train set arriving at your house...

So, I got contacts...
Thursday, June 19, 2008

...and I hate them.

Please tell me that you hated yours for the first couple of days and they hurt your eyes at first, but then they miraculously stopped bothering you.

With my luck, I'll be the super-freak who can't wear them and have to wear my glasses from now until eternity. NOT pleased.

I said left to right.
Tuesday, June 17, 2008

So, I just spent some time at the VA DMV this morning. DMV-time is always such a pleasant experience. Um. No. It's actually not.

I have had glasses since I was 12. They've always been "sometimes" glasses. I tend to wear them when I plan to be in front of a computer for any length of time, and always when I drive at night. They've never been needed to pass an eye test for my driver's license, even though failing has always been a fear of mine.

Well, I failed it today. So miserably, in fact, that when she said "please read line 2 from left to right," and I began, she said "I said left to right."

Confused that I had messed up my lefts and rights (looking down quickly to see which hand's thumb and pointer finger made an L to determine left), I realized that I couldn't read the damn letters because I couldn't see them.

Oops. Out came the specs, and I passed with flying colors.

Anyhow, after 16 years of being a part-time glasses wearer, I am about to book an appointment to get my first pair of contact lenses. Awesome (again, no).

On the plus side, the license doesn't expire until I turn 35. And (and this is a big one) I'd rank it my 2nd best DL picture ever. The first being from my learner's permit on my 16th birthday back in 1995.

12 MPG...no more
Saturday, June 14, 2008

So, I legitimately needed an SUV in Colorado. I can think of a handful of times where we would have been stuck at home without it.

It snowed once in MD last winter.

We're farther south now.

So, it was time. We traded in my big suv for a zippy little sedan. Our initial plan was to get a new Civic or Accord (or comparable), but somehow I ended up with a Saab 9-3!

Here's the new "mom car" in our driveway!

Busy. Crazy. Fun.
Saturday, June 14, 2008

Benjamin and I spent the bulk of this past week in Potsdam visiting with everyone. Despite some crazy storms, and about 25 hours sans power, the trip was a blast. Benjamin ran around outside like a crazy-man, and enjoyed playing with very limited borders (read, a HUGE backyard with lots of toddler-adventures).

He talked up a storm the entire time, mostly proclaiming his love for all things transportation related, and demonstrating his ability to spot dump trucks (truck-dumpts)just by sound.

Here are a couple of shots from the baby pool:

We spent a few hours out at Emily's house, which is in the most beautiful location. I had only seen it at night when we were there for Christmas, so I totally missed out on the waterfront views and awesome docks.

Here's B on his first canoe ride. He enjoyed helping with the rowing part.

Boat! Boat! Boat!

We had a fun BBQ with everyone on Wednesday night, and Benjamin was a trooper staying up until 10. He was asleep before we left the drive-way of Em's house!

Thursday afternoon, we said our good-byes, and drove to Syracuse where we spent the night at my grandmother's house (Benjamin's Gigi). She cooked us a lovely dinner, and Benjamin headed to bed before 9 (woot!). We stayed up talking for awhile, and then I headed to bed, hoping to get some rest for the long haul back home.

Following his trend for the week, Benjamin woke up at 5:30, and we were on the road by 6. We got home to Andrew around noon, and spent the rest of the day being bums, and swimming at the pool. We walked into town to have dinner at Jimmy's Old Town Tavern, which we'd been hoping to try out, and met another couple with a 22 month old who had recently moved to town from Arizona. We swapped information; it's almost creepy how much like dating meeting mom friends is. Hilarious, but totally mom-dating.

Benjamin got a soft-serve ice cream cone at Dairy Queen, and then we listened to the band playing at Friday Night Live. We danced a bit, and then Benjamin actually climbed into the stroller, which was a not-so-subtle hint that he was ready to call it a day.

Normally I am against food-face pics, but this was pretty cute to me.

Ice Cream!

He passed out in the stroller on the walk home, and was easily transferred to the crib when we got home.

On a semi-related note, I came home to a handful of deliveries, including my dining room chairs, a package with summer (sale!) clothes from J. Crew, and my Weekend Skirt from Sweet Birdie.

Here are the chairs:

And here is me, wrestling a toddler, post-beer-tent-trip, modeling my fantastic new skirt in a goofy way.

Weekend Skirt is here!!

And to see the length:

Weekend Skirt is here!!

That's about it from here. Tonight we might go to another outdoor concert, or just go to bed early. What I SHOULD do is to paint that last wall in the playroom so we can get moving on the rest of the decor down there...but a concert sounds like more fun!

Enjoy the rest of the weekend!

Very random...

Am I the only one who remembers Weezer at our Junior Year French Club Garage Sale?

Was it really Weezer?

Anyhow, Island in the Sun is currently on itunes' top 100 list, and I downloaded it tonight (chances are slim to none to find my cd) and I can't stop listening to it.

I miss you girls!

Pool Fun!
Thursday, June 05, 2008

Since random storms seem to come out of nowhere, we figured we'd take advantage of the 90-something and sunny day (well, evening) to go to the pool.

Pool fun!

Pool fun!

Because it's only cute for a little while longer...

Pool fun!

The most annoying thing about not having power...
Thursday, June 05, 2008

It's not the heat.

It's not the darkness. Nor the lack of television. Or microwaves. Or being bored.

It's trying to fall asleep hearing the hum, gurgle, buzz, hummmmmm of the neighbor's generator while being stuck in the hot, dark boring powerless house.

The second most annoying thing is manually scooping water from the sump-pump basin, and setting cell phone alarms hourly to do so.

And the backache from lugging at LEAST 50 gallons of water up the stairs over the course of the night.

Since the carpet was installed on Friday of last week, it seemed like a VERY small price to pay...

But, no tornadoes, no trees down, and we woke up able to make toaster-waffles and pancakes. So life is good.

Heard on the street...errrrr, parking lot.
Monday, June 02, 2008

Me: What color is that car?
B: Boo.
Me: What color is that car?
B: Yeddo (yellow, of course...his new favorite color).
Pointing to my car
Me: What color is that car?
B: Mom car.

So bright.

We were coloring at his little table this afternoon, and it happens to be in the living room window. Andrew was driving by to turn around and park in front of the house, and he started yelling "dad car dad! dad car!"

I couldn't believe he knew it just from it driving by!
